We begin the "John goes to the convention arc" with his both criticizing the way she packs his suitcase and reminding her that he got married so he wouldn't have to do so.

(Strip Number 4288, Original Publication Date, 31 January 1983)

Panel 1: We start things off with John telling Elly, who's packing his suitcase for him, to be careful how she does it.

Panel 2: Last time, you see, she'd forgotten his razor, deodorant and good socks.

Panel 3: She asks him why he doesn't simply do it himself.

Panel 4: She frowns as he smiles a phony smile, kisses her on the cheek and tells her that it's because she does it so well.

Summary: That's because she knows that he really means "Because that's what wives are for." Simply put, this is a solicitation for pity combined with a solicitation for letters that posit that men are incapable of treating women with respect and will always treat them like slaves. That's right, gang: Toilet Roll Lady will whinge again. Flay, Evil Willow, flay!!
