Panel 1: We find Mike and Elly marveling at a lucite globe filled with new pennies; as Mike explains, it's the paperweight off of Harry Lee's desk.
Panel 2: He then reminds us that the man gave him a "reward" just for being honest.
Panel 3: His smile turns into a frown when he tells Elly that he no longer has a Christmas present for her.
Panel 4: Since he's seven again, he's not happy to be hugged in public even if Elly is telling him that his "honesty" is the best gift that a mother could have.
Summary: An even better gift would have been a son that told Bob the Ladies' Wear Clerk "Mister....I stole this scarf because I wanted Mommy to have something nice for Christmas; I feel real bad and I ain't gonna do it again honest!!" Instead, we have him being given the impression that he has a character trait that he doesn't; combine that with his being punished and told that he's a bad person for doing something normal and it's kind of no wonder that he grows up to become the filthy dick who stranded his family on a rickety fire escape so he could rescue a laptop.
