Lizzie's howling refusal to go to daycare leads Elly to picture the workers going to extreme measures to silence her. Given that Elly is somewhat of an idiot, it would never occur to her to ask herself why Lizzie no longer finds it better than being with her; the only answer that satisfies her is that her children don't want her to be happy because that's what children are all about.

(Strip Number 340, Original Publication Date, 16 November 1982)

Panel 1: We find ourselves at the daycare center; Elly tries to shove a howling Lizzie inside by reminding her that it's only for the morning. The reason that this fails is that she forgot to divide her age by Lizzie's and multiply the three hours by sixteen to see how long it felt for Lizzie.

Panel 2: The daycare worker reassures Elly that she and her fellows know how to deal with screaming children who don't want Mommy to leave them behind forever.

Panel 3: A guilt-ridden, panicky-looking Elly imagines that they'll put Lizzie in stocks.

Summary: As I said upthread, Elly and Lynn simply don't seem to realize that two year olds process the passage of time differently than she would. Of course, were I foolhardy enough to post that little rule of thumb of mine, I'd get a lot of static from the target demographic for the collectors' plates Lynn might start selling.
