In today's strip, Mike is baffled by Elly's comparing him with Farley; given that both are scruffy and filthy and are both stupid because Elly failed to train them because that's too much like work, I can get behind her rare moment of candor.
(Strip Number 320, Original Publication Date, 14 October 1982)
Panel 1: Mike, who for some reason is covered in a layer of dirt, comes up to Elly and asks her how come Farley isn't smart like Lassie or Benji.
Panel 2: Elly tells him that she guesses it's because they haven't taken the time to train him properly.
Panel 3: She smiles as she tells him that you have to train your pets just like you have to train your children.
Panel 4: We then focus on Scruffy, Filthy Mike as he asks her how she can compare him with Scruffy, Filthy Farley.
Summary: Lynn's viewpoint will doubtlessly be that children and pets are akin because they make messes and add to their poor mother's burdens because they love chaos and hate to see their poor, poor, put-upon mother be happy because they're evil and chaotic and so on and so forth. I think that they're of a kind because Elly is too preoccupied with feeling sorry for herself to teach them to do what she wants them to.
