In today's strip, we remind ourselves that John supports Elly only to the extent that it doesn't inconvenience him; given that Elly doesn't see this as a problem, their marriage is based on mutual parasitism rather than love.

(Strip Number 311, Original Publication Date, 31 August 2011)

Panel 1: As Elly and Anne drive downtown, Anne tells her that she's glad that Elly's coming with her because she didn't feel like driving.

Panel 2: She then asks Elly if she told John she'd hired a sitter for the day.

Panel 3: Elly says that she didn't because John doesn't care how liberated she gets....

Panel 4: ...as long as she's home by six. This qualified sort of acceptance confuses Anne.

Summary: It doesn't confuse me; that's because I remember that John only ever seems to support Elly when it doesn't make his life harder; having to help with housework or care that he looks like a pervert or an ogre when he's doing what he wants when he wants it is simply too much to ask.
