Panel 1: We find the Pattersons in bed; as John tries to rest after a busy day aggravating his back, he has to listen to Elly whine "Connie and Phil made such a nice couple. Why would she go back to Ted? It makes absolutely no sense."
Panel 2: John turns to her and tells her that hers is not to reason why.
Panel 3: Hers is but to pry and pry; this reminder that he thinks that she wastes her time interfering in things that don't concern her angers her.
Summary: The need Elly has to make sure that Phil is trapped in the same sort of misery she willed upon herself because she thought it was expected of her despite what her parents told her seems to be colliding with her need to avenge herself on a man whose real sin is not taking her seriously; it's a slippery slope from openly mocking her pretenses to being utterly apathetic towards her and that's just awful.
