Today marks something of a milestone in Patterson history; that's because we have the first instance in which John's obsession with locomotives causes him to do something stupid.

(Strip Number 300, Original Publication Date, 6 August 1982)

Panel 1: As our story continues, we find John telling a conductor that his boy was wondering if he could meet the engineer.

Panel 2: As the man starts to quote VIA Rail policy about who's allowed in the locomotive car, John tells him that it would mean so much to Mike.

Panel 3: John then puts his hand over Mike's mouth to hush him up when he says that he doesn't actually want to see the engineer.

Panel 4: John the Stupid Train [Boxcar] bulges his eyes out in the same disturbing leer he had during the Storegasm as he thought-bubbles that he does.

Summary: Lynn clearly seems to have bitterly resented Rod's love of model railroading from the get-go; why else would she take an amusing hobby and turn it into a repulsive obsession like this?
