FBorFW Newsletter for August 2011

The latest newsletter is online and ready to be analyzed.

One more month of summer for those of us in the Northern hemisphere; we had record heat last month and some spectacular thunderstorms.

Have you been watching our weekly podcasts? They're only 2 or 3 minutes long, and feature quick interviews with Lynn. Watch her explain the origins of everyone's favourite plastic plumber, Ned in this one.

You can download the rest through iTunes free of charge or watch them on our website.

We told you a few months ago about the presentation Lynn made at the Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa. Their crew kindly posted the presentation on YouTube so you can see it! Watch it here (35 minutes).

We're nearly done our expanded character pages! In July we created Liz's. Explore her life through her relationship with other FBorFW characters, and re-read some of the milestone events like her first pair of glasses, her graduation and her breakup with Eric. We've now covered Elly, John, Michael and Liz. April's page is coming in August!

Lynn's older collection books are back in print! If you're trying to finish your collection and want signed copies from our shop, we've now got copies of all of them (except for the rare or unusual ones like More Than a Month of Sundays - if you're looking for those, try your local independent bookstore). Check the Steals and Deals section of this newsletter for a $5 discount coupon.

We've made some improvements to our comic strip catalog, where we've archived more than 11,000 of Lynn's strips. Now, when you're searching the catalog by keyword or looking for a strip with a particular punch line, you can search within a specific date range or search within a book, and these search tools have been enhanced in other ways. You should now find it easier to locate the strips you've been looking for!

Have you joined us on Facebook yet? We have a trivia contest once a week - "like" our page for a chance to win.

We're still posting episodes of the animated FBorFW series on our site; each one is about seven minutes long and is a segment from the show that once ran on Canada's Teletoon network. Check for a new one every week.

In July on our Coffee Talk page (where Lynn regularly answers questions from readers), Lynn told us about Elly Jansen, for whom Elly Patterson was named:

"Elly Jansen was my best friend in grade seven. We used to sit side by side in class, hang out and go to the movies together. I wondered why she would be so quiet when the rest of us made so much noise. I didn't know she suffered from terrible headaches because she rarely complained.

The last time I saw her was just before Christmas. During the holidays, she collapsed and was hospitalized. She died a day later from a massive tumour which in those days was hard to diagnose. Her funeral was the saddest thing I'd ever experienced.

I never forgot her and when it was time to name the characters in the strip, I used everyone's second name except for Elly- who was named for my friend Elly Jansen. I have kept in touch with her sister who still lives in our old neighbourhood. And that's the story!"

Farley And The Lost Bone, our brand new children's book, has been published and is now available from our shop. We've also bundled the book with a plush Farley at a $5 discount. Check out our kids' books here, and don't forget to look in the Steals and Deals part of this newsletter for a coupon code!

Our 2012 wall calendars are now available! We know it's early, but the print runs are really small and we wanted to make sure we ordered enough for everyone! Get yours now, before our supplies run out.

We keep getting asked "How do I get FBorFW by email?" Universal Uclick offers two types of accounts on GoComics.com - paid (Genius) and free - and both allow you to get comics by email. Sign up for your free account here. You can also learn more about the difference between services and upgrade to Genius level if you wish.

If you were Elizabeth, which FBorFW character would you have married?

Tell us whom you'd choose and why and we'll choose one winner to receive a surprise FBorFW gift.

Next month: a different challenge and a different prize! Thanks for joining in!

- Lynn should have straight-up said that Katie and Lane are going to have a child this November.

- Also, the 'who Liz should have married' contest is going to remind Lynn of some uncomfortable facts she needs to deny in order to be happy with the way she ended the strip.
