In today's strip, we remind ourselves that Elly is always one step behind what's going on around her and that someone else always pays the price.

(Strip Number 6680, Original Publication Date, July 25, 1982)

Panel 1: We start things off with Lizzie, who doesn't know her own strength what with her being two and everything, hugging a baffled Farley and saying "Nizzie kiss Doggie!!"

Panel 2: Nizzie then sit on Doggie!! (Given that Doggie's eyes are bulging out, he ain't enjoying it as nearly as much as Nizzie.)

Panel 3: Since Nizzie doesn't quiiiiiiiite yet understand that other people and animals feel pain, she doesn't realize that cooing "Nice doggie!! Nizzie give him pats!!" doesn't make smacking him on the head any the nicer.

Panel 4: She also has no idea how heavy she is so doesn't understand that her wanting to go for a ride might be a problem.

Panel 5: We then return to that not knowing that Farley feels pain thing again when she happily yanks on his ears and tries pulling them off.

Panel 6: Remember that thing I said about not knowing her own strength or how heavy she is? It comes into play when she half-way body-slams him so as to once again sit on him.

Panel 7: Nizzie's next attempt to use Farley as a play-toy is interrupted when he barks at her; if you said "NOW Elly shows up just in time to misread the situation in the worst, stupidest fashion possible", you've just won one internet.

Panel 8: Since she never seems to know what's going on around her and can only act on what limited information she bothers collecting, Elly's yelling "Bad, bad dog" at him makes a sad sort of sense.

Panel 9: So does grabbing him by the scruff of the neck and whining about poor little Elizabeth; as she does so, the other person who gets jammed up because of her inattention makes the scene.

Panel 10: We end this down-beat slice of unhappy life when Mike asks Farley if he wants to talk to someone who understands.

Summary: What we, of course, are dealing with is Elly's never quite understanding what's going on around her; even if she actually saw the whole thing instead of storming around the house in a blind panic all the time, she'd still yell "Bad dog" because she doesn't know any better. To make a long, sad story short, we're once again asking why they let this woman breed and have pets since she's no good at either and never gets any better.
