In today's strip, Phil is mildly baffled when John and Elly remind him that he'll be pet-sitting while they're in Vancouver. This inability to see the obvious must be why he was so blindsided by Connie's deciding to give Ted another chance.
(Strip Number 289, Original Publication Date, 23 July 1982)
Panel 1: As Mike hands John a suitcase, he asks if Uncle Phil is coming on the train with them.
Panel 2: John tells Mike that Phil not only has to work, he's gotta go apartment hunting.
Panel 3: Elly smiles slyly as she tells Mike not to worry about Phil spending his evenings alone.
Panel 4: John tells him that they're leaving Farley in his care; Phil's reaction is to be mildly gobsmacked.
Summary: Since Phil doesn't have as much experience with pets as Elly does, this doesn't seem as it'll go well. Remember, he didn't have a pet growing up either because Marian/Ursula didn't hold with having filthy, disease-ridden creatures in her nice clean home.
