Panel 1: We start things off with a tight close-up of Mike's panicked face as he yells for Elly. Since he has to repeat the word "Mom", it's fairly obvious that he's fighting a strong need she has to not pay attention to him.
Panel 2: Now that he's got it, he tells her that Farley has just ran away.
Panel 3: His need to preface the statement that Mrs Baird said that he and the rest of the pack of intact males were chasing a female in heat with the qualifier 'Honest!' sets off an alarm bell in my mind. It's as if he's used to not being believed or something.
Panel 4: He needn't have worried about that; her snarling the word "MEN!!!" reminds us that she thinks that men exist to cat around on their pooooooooooooooor, put-upon wives.
Summary: In the book, of course, Farley was chasing a yummy smell, not giving in to his throbbing biological urges; that's 'cause Beth couldn't have him do that. It's sort of too bad that she had to wait until Edgar came along so as to remind Lynn that maybe neutering pets was a good idea.
