Panel 1: We find the Pattersons in bed; Elly, who seems to be using one of those pillows that are designed for people with back pain, reminds John that her exam is coming up in two days and she's fairly nervous.
Panel 2: John reassures her by telling her that she'll be fine and should believe in herself; she's worked very hard and he has tremendous faith in her.
Panel 3: His continuing to reassure her by saying that if she should flunk, it's no big deal leaves her gobsmacked.
Summary: That's because whatever he was going to say next will be drowned out by her trying to get him to admit that he thinks that she, a mere woman, is too stupid to get a degree and that educating her is a waste of resources. Don't believe me? Check out the Lynnsight that accuses every man in the world of wanting to keep her from getting the degree she doesn't want to get because of that learning curve she hates.
