Ted's attempt to patch things up with Connie leads to his under-reacting to her violently profane response; that's what he gets for listening to his mother instead of letting the Connie seed planted in his head blossom.
(Strip Number 4172, Original Publication Date, 15 May 1982)
Panel 1: We start things off with Ted on the phone; he's smiling as he says "Connie, babe, it's me....TED!" but he won't be for long.
Panel 2: That's because he's greeted with angry cursing; the length and volume of said profanity makes him wince.
Panel 3: Since he still thinks he can patch things over while the pain of being dumped is still fresh in her mind, he tells Connie that he detects a hint of resentment in her voice.
Summary: We know that he eventually does get back together with her only to lose interest when he remembers that his mother might have her pegged after all; he then vacillates between his attraction to her and his remembering what a pain in the neck she can be.
