Panel 1: We find ourselves watching an admiring Mike watching Phil play trumpet; we remind ourselves that Lynn thinks that any music she can't sing along to as part of a crowd so as to avoid having to spend real effort learning is discordant noise by looking at the ridiculous un-sound effects.
Panel 2: Since trumpet playing takes the effort Lynn hates so much, it makes her sick,
Panel 3: Mike, having walked to the kitchen, tells Elly that Phil needs something cold to rest against his lips.
Panel 4: Mike's telling her that Phil suggested a beer vexes Elly so much, she breaks the ice cube tray she bought at the dollar store.
Summary: How do we reconcile the fact that Elly hates to see Phil or John get drunk with the fact that when Lynn goes overseas, the first thing she samples is the local beer? The answer that comes most readily to this author is that she's pissed because if they drink it all, she won't have something to spike her coffee with when the kids become too much to bear.
