In today's strip, the soft spot Phil has for children ends up competing with the blind spot he has about how his behavior is perceived.

(Strip Number 4165, Original Publication Date, 6 May 1982)

Panel 1: We begin the proceedings with Phil on Connie's doorstep doing a lame impersonation of Maurice Chevalier as he tells his petit chou that she looks particularly munchable ce soir.

Panel 2: Lawrence reacts to the melvin posturings of Asshole Love Interest Who Jerked His Mother Around Number 78 by rolling his eyes and muttering "Oh, brother."

Panel 3: As Lawrence sits there wondering what insane thing his mother will do to try to attract the fool with the scrub brush glued to his nose this time, Phil asks if he should try a different entrance.

Summary: The trouble as I see it is that Phil would as soon not admit that his presence has a negative effect on people; if it were pointed out to him that he might have done wrong and might do wrong in the future by enabling Connie's need to throw Lawrence under the bus to get herself a mayyyyyyyyun!!!!, he'd remind you that he's Elly's brother by spouting angry gibberish about how he can't be held accountable for what people think. Also, he super wouldn't want to acknowledge that Lawrence's natural resentment of him has any validity; y'see, it's on a kid who hates having his life messed up by spoiled children like Phil that things are going wrong.
