Today's strip is the first part of a one-two punch that introduces one of Lynn's favorite themes: Elly getting frustrated because of her hapless incompetence with mechanical devices and then being angered by the presence of people who have the patience to learn.

(Strip Number 4150, Original Publication Date, 17 March 1982)

Panel 1: We start off with Elly scowling because her sewing machine is malfunctioning; since Lynn has a bit of a tin ear, this is indicated by a dialog bubble that says "BMMMPHA-TIKKA-CRUNCH-JAM!"

Panel 2: She then tells the machine "What's the matter? You've just been oiled, you dumb junkheap!!"

Panel 3: We next see her on the phone pleading to Annie to come over for coffee NOW!!

Panel 4: That's because her sewing machine hates her.

Summary: Actually, it doesn't; as we'll see Thursday, Elly is doing it wrong because she doesn't have the patience to learn how to do it right. My guess is that we're looking at the reason she does most of the annoying stuff she does; since she's an impatient dimwit who doesn't want to admit to being confused, unaware or incorrect, she plows through life screaming like a banshee at the commonplace.
