It would be easier to sympathize with Connie's plight had she not re-invented herself in order to be the woman she thought Ted wanted.

(Strip Number 4143, Original Publication Date, 9 March 1982)

Panel 1: We're about a second or two after Connie looked at her watch; as she continues pouring her heart out, she tells Elly that Ted told her that she's too tall and doesn't cook the way his mother does.

Panel 2: He also doesn't much care for her taste in clothes or literature.

Panel 3: He then said that she talks too fast and laughs too much.

Panel 4: She sums up what bothers her about his calling it off by asking why he started dating her in the first place.

Summary: The trouble I have is that we know that Connie tends to try to change who she is in order to be a better girlfriend; my guess is that Ted has never met the real Connie Poirier and never will. I also happen to know that this is a checklist of rationalizations Ted spun off in order to avoid admitting that commitment scared the Hell out of him.
