Panel 1: As John reads his paper, he asks Elly, who's dishing out supper, why it's so surprising that Annie is expecting.
Panel 2: She repeats his question and tells him that Annie kept saying that she only wanted the one.
Panel 3: Noticing that he's smiling a knowing smile, she asks him why he thinks that this was planned.
Panel 4: He says it's because they kept all the paraphernalia from the first time round.
Summary: Lynn's attempt to make Rod into an insensitive clod who willfully refuses to see how downtrodden the women in his neighborhood are flatlined again. The reason, of course, is that John simply confused correlation with causation; he has no way of knowing what goes on in that household and simply assumed that it's like his own. The knowing smirk he has thus reveals less about what happened with Annie and, well, more about him. As for Lynn being a final arbiter as to say what happened, well, that's sort of a wash; that's because her answer changes every time one asks.
