Panel 1: We find ourselves watching John looking at Mike and Lizzie's toys and telling us that he can't believe all the toys they have.
Panel 2: His silhouette exclaims that kids today have so much, it borders on decadence.
Panel 3: He then tells Elly that they never had so much stuff when they were kids.
Panel 4: Her reaction is to surmise that it's why they're buying it now.
Summary: John does have half a point; what he's trying to say in his own bass-ackwards way is that less can be more. The problem is that it looks as if he's just pissed because Santa wasn't as generous when he was a kid.
