Panel 1: We start things off with Elly trying to get Lizzie dressed to go out; as she tries putting a white hat on her child, Lizzie, who's holding a red hat, tells her that she wants the red hat.
Panel 2: Elly tells her "Come on. Elizabeth..."
Panel 3: ....before trying to point out how nicely the white hat goes with her snow suit. Since Lizzie wants the red hat, she doesn't want to hear about how well it goes with anything.
Panel 4: Elly gets all Gorey-eyed when her attempt to simply take the red hat off and put the white one on results in Lizzie yelling "No! I want the RED hat!!" (It's at this point that Lynn is already patronizingly clucking her idiot tongue at childless types like me who ask "What the Hell did you expect Lizzie to do, dumbass??")
Panel 5: Her attempts at appealing to aesthetics and using brute force having failed, Elly tries a new tactic to stiff-arm her daughter's unwanted and unwelcome habit of thinking for herself. She does so by smiling and asking a reluctant Lizzie to pretend that the white hat is a magic hat; one day, a magic white bunny was caught in a hunter's trap and
Panel 6: For saving her life, the magic rabbit gave her its tail...
Panel 7: ...which Lizzie sewed onto a pretty white hat and made a wish.
Panel 8: She then puts the white hat on Lizzie and asks her what she thinks she wished for.
Panel 9: Given that Lizzie's yelling about wanting the red hat has generated gale-force winds, my guess is that she wants a mother who'll let her wear a red hat when she wants to do so.
Summary: While I do appreciate that it's a pain in the ass to deal with children by times, Elly clearly seems to enjoy making it as painful as possible for all concerned. I also that this is also Grade-A Coffee Talk fodder in which Sadie Jo Zitslaff of North Haverbrook gets to gurgle about how stubborn her Lizzie is, What I don't know is why Elly simply doesn't let Lizzie wear the red hat in the first place so she can get being martyred over with quickly.
