Now that Steph has made sure that the New Year's Eve strip runs on New Year's Eve, we get to look at Michael getting confused and feeling gypped because there are no presents for New Year's Day.

(Strip Number 207, Original Publication Date, 31 December 1981)

Panel 1: As we rejoin our story, we find the Pattersons (including Mike now that he's been judged to be old enough to stay up till midnight on a special occasion like this) watching the countdown; as the ball drops, they chant "Three, two, one" and cheer the arrival of the new year.

Panel 2: Carrie hugs Mike and tells him it's another year; since she's wishing him a Happy 1982, it should be interesting to see what Lynn new-and-improves it to. Knowing her, they'll be ringing in 11982 or something.
(ETA: It's a rather awkwardly written "NEW YEAR"; way to keep things timeless.)

Panel 3: As Elly ushers him back to his room, Mike, who's no longer smiling asks if that's it; Elly says that yes, that's it, sweetie and to go to bed.

Panel 4: The look on his face when he asks "What?? No presents??" is sort of alarming.

Summary: That's because it betrays a lack of awareness on his creator's part; we know that we're dealing with a small child who is just now learning that special occasions don't automatically mean that he gets a gift. Lynn thinks that she's dealing with a greedy little jerk with a case of what she calls the gimmes.
