Today's strip makes a joke of Lizzie's fear of unfamiliar things, people and situations; when one considers that she married Assthony in order to grow out of the 'foolish' and 'immature' idea that all those things were not, by definition, either a threat or worthless, this isn't at all funny.

(Strip Number 4106, Original Publication Date, 15 December 1981)

Panel 1: We find ourselves at Pearson International Airport as Elly, Mike and Lizzie hear the PA announcer tell them that Air Canada Flight 81 from Winnipeg is now arriving and passengers may be met....

Panel 2: As we get to Gate Question Mark, we see that Mike and Lizzie are thrilled; he yells "Yaay!! Gramma and Grampa are here" and she says "GAMMA!! GAMPA!!"

Panel 3: Will/Vern and Carrie/Alice say a cheery "Hello, there!" to their grandchildren.

Panel 4: Since Lizzie tends to fear the unfamiliar, she hides behind a baffled Elly and yells "Shriek!!"

Summary: It's sort of not 'on' to laugh off a small child's fear of the unfamiliar; one might as well mock them for not being born speaking perfect English. That being said, we have years of watching Lizzie being confused and frightened by the novel to contend with so this sort of thing will be a familiar sight.
