Elly's theorizing about what it takes to be a writer ends with a comment that reveals her to be an ignorant poser. Since Lynn was taking a mild poke at Elly's pretentiousness yesterday, this might be one of those rare instances where Infallible!Mom is actually in the wrong.

(Strip Number 4089, Original Publication Date, 4 November 2010)

Panel 1: Elly responds to the instructor's question about how she sees the role of a writer by saying "Who, me? Er....I feel that a writer must also be an entertainer."

Panel 2: When asked how that applies to writing for, say, a newspaper, she says "Huh?? Yes, that especially applies to newspaper reporting."

Panel 3: The unseen instructor's unheard question of how long Elly's been reading a newspaper has her stumped; she repeats the question...

Panel 4: And makes her classmates roll their eyes in bemused irritation when she wonders out loud how old the dog is.

Summary: Remember in the original version that her evil, arrogant teacher made a cruel, demeaning, unfair crack about bored housewives looking for a change? I think what made him an extra-bad person is that he's on to something; Elly isn't very good at writing, doesn't understand what's expected of her and doesn't have the stamina to learn. Why, she can't even put it together that the lady who runs the Valley Voice can't actually afford to pay her. Heck, even Lynn might say that a doctor with a flashlight will appear so we can see where she's getting this from.
