Today's strip, in which Elly returns to her night school courses, reminds us that it took a long time for John to take Elly's concerns seriously. Simply put, it took getting lost in the woods and damned near dying to get him to stop ascribing her need to get him to pick up after his own lazy ass to hormones. Too bad that by then, he'd programmed Mike into being an even worse jackhole than he was.

(Strip Number 4087, Original Publication Date, 2 November 1981)

Panel 1: We start off with Michael asking Elly if she's going back to that night school; she says "Uh huh!"

Panel 2: His asking how come is greeted with her saying that she wants to improve her mind.

Panel 3: Night school, she says, is a means of expansion, of reawakening one's talents,

Panel 4: John butts in with an assholish remark about it being a means of escape.

Summary: The Offical Story: Years of John's making demeaning wisecracks like this (accompanied by comments that upbraid her for wanting to be taken seriously) and bloviating about how her crazy hormones want her to do crazy things like escape her destiny of baking cookies and darning socks to the impressionable mind of his idiot son (along with all the "If you don't stop interrupting me, I'll smack you upside the head" crap she pulled) turned Mike into an implacable enemy of Elly's ambitions; even in the latest days, he never quite managed to admit to being a stupid jerk about her wanting to expand her horizons. She got her revenge for being told she wasn't a real mom because she wanted a life that didn't serve his needs, though; she managed to get four awful books ghost-written with his name on the cover.

My Take: See Tomorrow's Summary.

ETA: Man, it ain't even the day after Halloween and Lynn's latest banner is talking about Winter. I don't know about you but I'm with Farley on this one.
