We end the week with a reminder that Lynn thinks that domestic harmony comes from children being reminded that their parents don't have to feed, clothe and house them. The assumption here is that now that Mike has been reminded that he does, in fact, owe his parents, he's happy; his discontent seems to spring from the 'bizarre' assumption that his parents are legally and morally bound to care for him.

(Strip Number 179, Original Publication Date, 3 October 1981)

Panel 1: We start off with Lawrence marveling because Mike is raking leaves.

Panel 2: He then asks if he's doin' it 'cause he has to.

Panel 3: Mike replies that he's doing it because he wants to. It's at this point that I suspect that Lynn will gush about how great it was to have not being cursed at and called an ungrateful burden that her poor mother should never had to bear as an incentive was.

Panel 4: Lawrence heads home and says that he'll come back when Mike is feeling better.

Summary: He should come back with a phalanx of people from CPS. That, or a Mafia hitman to liquidate two assholes who've successfully convinced a child that an ethical obligation is a huge favor that needs to be repaid by using his own conscience against him. I mean, you can use a child's desire to be good to your own selfish ends just like you can get a duck to dance by putting it on a hotplate; it doesn't mean you should. As for the notes, we're probably going to get another look at Lynn's screwed-up childhood as she reminds us that she went to a lot of trouble just to be thought of as acceptable.
