Today's strip is another example of Elly telling Annie to do something she would never do herself; it's also an examination of the near-impossibility of explaining an enthusiasm to someone who doesn't understand it.

(Strip Number 4069, Original Publication Date, 22 September 1981)

Panel 1: As she drinks her tea and eats her cookie, Annie makes a half-palms-out gesture and asks why people watch football in the first place.

Panel 2: She goes on to state that all it is is a bunch of padded-up men bending over; it should be noted that her facial expression indicates that this assessment is an example of the strange sort of judgmental bafflement she applies to most everything Steve likes.

Panel 3: She then smugly whines that they run around, fall down and it's another view of rear ends.

Panel 4: Elly smiles, makes a full palms-out with her own tentacle fingers and posits that she and Steve see things from a different perspective.

Summary: There's more than trying to explain a sport to people who don't understand the appeal going on here, of course. There's not only Elly trying to cajole Annie into doing something she'd never do, there's also Annie's huffy refusal to like any God-damned thing Steve does. No matter what the passion, she makes a whiny show of not liking it and blustering that he only likes things to make her life harder only to stand around wondering why he strayed from her unyielding, hostile presence.
