Mike's not quite wanting to believe that a pair of his overalls survived his lifestyle reminds us that Lynn thinks children are all willfully destructive because they hate it when adults are happy.

(Strip Number 169. Original Publication Date, 4 September 1981)

Panel 1: We start off with Elly telling an off-screen Mike that the three-to-five year old version of Lizzie can wear his overalls.

Panel 2: Now that he's entered the room, she tells him that they're hand-me-downs from when he was little.

Panel 3: Instead of reminding Elly that Lizzie is mandated by federal law to wear overalls with those damnable ruffles, Mike insists that there's no way the could be his, Ma.

Panel 4: For one thing, the knees are intact.

Summary: We know that knees on clothing wear out due to over-exertion no matter how careful we are with them; Lynn does not. She seems to think that children like Michael deliberately damage clothing because they hate it when their mothers are happy.
