Howcome we hafta lookit hickspeak an'bad grammar?

As you might have guessed, I'm not a fan of Lynn's misaimed linguistic snobbery. Having to slog through her ham-fisted attempts to indicate how people speak is as much an impediment to understanding what's going on as the unsound effects are. I've noticed that it takes the following primary forms:

  1. Broken Juvenile English: When Lynn wants to remind us that a character is young (and trying to drive Elly up the wall by speaking 'messy', 'sloppy' English), his or her dialogue is loaded with ineptly phonetized forms such as 'hafta', 'gotta', 'walkin’' and 'an’'. This is probably owing to Lynn's belief that she herself does not use said forms on a daily basis.
  2. Hickspeak: Not only is Elly 'better' than her children, she's also the superior of farmers and the working class poor; this is proven by having them jabber away in a stereotypical form of English that vanished more or less the same time that CBS's 'rural purge' made Green Acres and Mayberry, RFD as one with Nineveh and Tyre.
  3. Anti-Americanism: Lynn seems to have little tolerance for what she believes is the Americanization of Canadian English; since she falsely believes that most of us do not drop yods, she writes "stupid" as "stoopid" to highlight the use of an 'inferior' form of English. It's things like that and the wave of hickspeak that make me glad that she never tried to show us what she thinks Southerners sound like.
  4. Old-Countryese: She has the annoying habit of having fourth- or fifth-generation descendants of immigrants speak as if they themselves have just come off the boat.
  5. Shan...non...ese: Not only does Lynn misinterpret how the developmentally disabled speak, she insists on in...flict...ing her mis...app...re...hen...sion on us.
  6. Hypocrisy: What really makes all of this hard to stomach is that Lynn herself commits errors of usage, spelling and grammar and tends to not react well to being corrected. As by way of example, she still thinks that weird is spelled wierd.
