We're at the Lessons-not-learned phase of the Vacation from Hell; what Elly took away from this horrible experience is not that she should have gotten them to flee Not-Ted's-cabin the second she realized the couch was a nesting ground for vermin. What she learned is that she has enough martyrdom fuel to pick next summer's destination.

(Strip Number 157, Original Publication Date, 30 July 1981)

Panel 1: We find ourselves somewhere along the long road from Sioux Lookout back to Milborough; the station wagon is a little less crowded because they're towing a U-HaulU-Rent trailer with a bald, shaved, smelly Farley in it. As John grips the wheel, he asks Elly "Come on....despite the lousy cabin, skunk and flies, surely you can find something good to say about our trip."

Panel 2: She smiles as she says "Yeah! Next year, I get to pick where we go on vacation."

Summary: A person who was actually inclined to confront people when it counted (instead of a Patterson who lives in pants-wetting terror of being thought of as not-nice) could have ended this the second Mike explained that the lumps in the couch moved under their own steam so I am not actually sympathetic with her. Add in the fact that next year's vacation got messed up because she made much the same sort of mistake owing to the same inability to look before she lept, you'll see why I don't much feel anything for her that isn't contempt.
