In today's strip, Lynn's inability to remember that not everywhere in the world is as far from everything as Lynn Lake and her lack of sympathy for how bored children get when bombing down the highway with nothing to do but sit there add a bit of poignancy to the use of the cliché 'Are we there yet?'

(Strip Number 148, Original Publication Date, 14 July 1981)

Panel 1: We see the Patterson's station wagon driving down a scenic byway in order to avoid the congested highway which at its worst would only have taken John six hours or so to get from Milborough to cottage country. Two things should be noted: a) it's so weighed down, the tires actually touch pavement and b) since it's one long exterior shot, the dialogue bubbles are all on top of the car. We start things off with Michael asking Elly if they're there yet; this is because they've been driving for hours and he's bored.

Panel 2: Since she has no real sympathy for him, Elly testily explains that they have another eight hours on the road so he should stop asking.

Panel 3: The station wagon continues on down the road.

Panel 4: As the car heads off to the horizon, Mike asks "Are we there yet?"

The problem, of course, is that Lynn doesn't realize how stupid and foolhardy she's making the Pattersons look. As I said, she'd probably explain John's taking the scenic route as his well-meaning attempt to do something great for the children they're making bored and tired. When you remember that she also thought that sending everyone to the farm to perform hard labor in crowded conditions was a great thing for the kids as well, you start to realize that the Pattersons are idiots. This will also come into play when they assume that the abandoned shack they find must be Ted's cabin because it's what a vacation cottage is "supposed" to look like.
