Thursday, 1 July 2010: Vacation 1981, Day 2

In today's strip, we have Elly getting all huffy about the prospect of being trapped in a car with two active children who don't understand that they're only supposed to move, think and speak when adults will it.

(Strip Number 4028, Original Publication Date, 2 July 1981)

Panel 1: We see John of the Stemless Eyeglasses smiling as he holds a piece of paper and set of keys; he tells Elly "Here's the map Ted drew up and the keys to his cabin."

Panel 2: She replies by saying "Great! Then everything's ready but the survival kit."

Panel 3: As Mike comes over to see what Ma and Daddy are talking about, John says "'Survival kit'? The place is fully equipped; what's there to 'survive'?" (Quotation marks mine.)

Panel 4: We scratch 'narrowed eyes of frustration' off the bingo card as Elly tells him "The two-day trip it takes to get there." We also see what Elly has to survive: Mike, Lizzie and Farley.

Summary: I know that it isn't always fun to travel with kids but Elly's attitude stinks on ice; that's because she goes into this with the assumption that her children will be as bratty as possible because they're evil and hate the idea of her being happy.

ETA: A new month brings us a new banner that depicts the Pattersons having a pleasant time; notice that Elly is absent.
