"Thanks Jim. You're listening to Here and Now on CBC-1 in Toronto. I'm Jane Haughton.
"As Robert mentioned in the news on the half hour, there was another shock over in Milborough this morning when a decomposed body was found partially buried in a ruined basement of a Milborough home. Of course, this was on top of the recent death of Elly Patterson, which is being investigated by Milborough police. The CBC's Neal Goodman has been following that story for us. Hello, Neal!"
"Hi there, Jane!"
"What do we know this hour, Neal?"
"Well, so far the Milborough police haven't released any information. However, we do know a number of things. First off, it's well known that the house in question belongs to British national Gavin Caine, who has lived and worked in Milborough as an accountant for about forty years. Gavin Caine recently made headlines when he opposed Parliament's investigation into the illegal disposal of toxic materials in the Milborough area in the fifties, as you might recall, Jane."
"I do. Now, why exactly did he oppose that investigation?"
"Well, I think he reflected some feelings in the community that the past was the past and there wouldn't be any good done in digging that past up. He was also quite vocal about his concerns that the investigation would hurt property values and slow development in the Milborough area. Now, one interesting thing is he was directly opposed by John Patterson -- a local dentist with records going back decades who could show some evidence of real... you know, real trouble matching up to the time of the disposal. And of course, John Patterson was the husband of Elly Patterson."
"Now, is this new body they've found related to the Elly Patterson case?"
"Well, probably not directly. They haven't released any details, but from what I've been able to find out, this body's probably been in a disused section of the basement, buried under debris for some twenty or thirty years. However, while they haven't officially called Elly Patterson's death a murder, it's pretty well known that the police are talking to a lot of folks about the circumstances of it, and as far as I know Gavin Caine was one of the people they talked to."
"So, if this body doesn't belong to... I'm sorry, I mean if this body isn't connected to Elly Patterson, then who exactly is it?"
"Well, we don't know that yet. There are some rumors flying around, but that's all they are right now. We only know it was a body because some kids in the neighborhood were drawn to the scene by the police cars and tape and they saw a covered body being removed. That led the police after a lot of questioning to confirm they had recovered human remains from the location after 1 in the afternoon."
"Where is Gavin Caine now?"
"Well, we don't know about that. We know his wife and daughter -- he's got a daughter who's high school age -- are both staying out of the public eye right now. Gavin Caine's offices are closed right now, and his lawyer has no comment for us. Now, Gavin Caine's adult son Anthony is supposed to be in the area too, and he was sighted going into the police headquarters here in Milborough about four and a half hours ago, before they made the announcement about the body. He may still be in there."
"Was he under arrest?"
"No, he was just going in, apparently with his wife. Now, you want to know something interesting, Jane?"
"His wife is Elizabeth Patterson Caine -- and she's the eldest daughter of Elly Patterson, the woman who died just over a week ago. So in addition to everything else, Gavin Caine's related to Elly Patterson by marriage."
"So even if this case has nothing to do with the Patterson death--"
"It's still a pretty close connection, yeah."
"Okay -- well, thank you very much, Neal. Neal Goodman, reporting from Milborough. Now, over to the arts. Rebecca McGuire was probably better known as just 'Rebecca' a few years back, when she spilled out onto the teen pop scene for a short time. Now she's a little bit older, and McGuire's been exploring her musical roots. Her latest CD is less pop, more ethno-rock with a strong First Nations bend. Here's one of the tracks. This is Metis Dawn."
