Panel 1: We start off with Elly, who's wearing a nice dress, asking John how she looks; he says "Fine."
Panel 2: It would seem that this doesn't answer her real question so she states it more clearly by asking if she looks like a competent, sensitive person; he again goes all monosyllabic and says "Sure."
Panel 3: It's his turn to be concerned that he doesn't look his best; this makes him ask "What about me? Should I change my shoes? Shave?"
Panel 4: As John rids himself of his five o'clock shadow and Elly brushes her teeth, she thought-bubbles that parent-teacher night is always a little unnerving.
Summary: I can sort of empathize with their wanting to put their best foot forward; I just wish that they would put this much thought and effort into raising their children.
