That's for later on; right now, John and Elly's hangover has to get in the way of Mike's enjoying life.
Panel 1: We start off with a happy Mike yelling "HAPPY NEW YEAR!! WOO-HOO!! YAH-HOOOO!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!"
Panel 2: This attracts the attention of bleary-eyed John who, as always, looks frakking ugly when he gets out of bed; he asks Michael what's going on because it's six in the morning and nobody is up yet. Mike says that he is.
Panel 3: He's really keyed up as he tells his obviously hung-over father "An' it's a brand new YEAR!! I wanna do something great today!! I wanna do something totally, amazingly, perfectly COOL!!!"
Panel 4: Mike then asks himself what he can do; John tells him that he has an idea.
Panel 5: He can let his sour killjoy parents sleep until eight.
Summary: The year thus begins with a reminder that the Pattersons never really adapted to the presence of children in their house, never got over the idea that Mike, Liz and April had to give way to their needs. We are, after all, talking about the same man who zoomed by an amusement park so he could subject his kids to listening to him chew the fat with other crashing bores merely because going down the slip-and-slide was not to his tastes and the same mother who tells her kids that there'd be nothing to do in Mexico so they should stay home and feel like afterthoughts.
