Panel 1: Sigh. Look, I suppose LJ wants to put instant exposition in the first panel of each strip, for people who are just tuning in. But first of all, not every cartoonist does that. Brooke McEldowney, for instance. If you missed the last three days of 9 Chickweed Lane and are at a loss to understand why Edda seems to be in a passionate embrace with her openly gay roommate, you can darn well go back and read the last three strips! And second of all, there are more subtle ways of conveying this information than Elly shrieking, "This is a police station!" Just start with the guy saying, "We finished building this police station last year."

And in fact, that information just gives rise to more questions. Is this a town so newly incorporated that they didn't used to have a police station? Or one that grew so fast that they needed a second one and this is it? Or is it supplanting one that was decades old and not up to modern standards? Is he about to hit Elly up for a donation?

Panel 2: 3 cells? Just three? So do they only anticipate having three miscreants at a time? Or is one for men, one for women and one for unregistered pets or something?

Panel 3: Oh, MAN! What is the point of having Elly spend the night at the cop shop if she's not going to be in a cell?!

Panel 4: Well, at least "room service" wasn't in "quotes". And Elly's another one with big knobbly hooves.
