Hello, I'm Montez, a friend of Iris's. She asked me to let her friends know that Jim passed away at 12:23 this morning. She said he was restless all night and kept eying the book that his grandson wrote. Finally, Iris picked it up and started to read it to him. She got no farther than the dedication thanking her for loving Jim and Jim made a sound to stop her. He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it. She started to cry and couldn't find a tissue. She stepped into the bathroom... and when she stepped out, Jim stopped had stopped breathing.
(My take on the matter is that Jim wasn't going to let Iris see him die, that he knew how hard it was to see someone you care about die and didn't want to do that to her. I was a nurse for 45 years, I've seen it happen.)
Jim's body is going to be donated to medical science so that in death, he might help doctors understand more about the causes of his aphasia. As a result, the memorial service will be held later in August. In the mean time, Iris requested that if you want to honor Jim's memory, please buy a music teacher an instrument, donate tickets to a concert to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, or donate a toy to a foster family.
