For Better or For Worse Newsletter
=================== Greetings from the Team: ===================
Hello folks! June has arrived; the people of the First Nations refer to the sixth
moon of creation as the Strawberry Moon. It's a time when communities gather for
their annual feasts and welcome all their members back. The strawberry blossoms are
beginning to turn into strawberries, and the birds have all returned to our area.
=================== Studio Happenings: ==================
Our Farley-themed children's book is now available! This book was written by Lynn
and her sister-in-law, Beth Cruikshank, whom many of you will know as Aunt Bev from
FBoRFW. Farley Follows His Nose has been specially endorsed by the Girl Guides of
Canada, and you can find your signed copy here in our shop: http://store.fborfw.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=50&products_id=124
Lynn just returned from a series of signings and media events in Toronto to promote
the book, which has garnered an excellent reception from kids and adults alike.
We're now on Twitter! Follow "fborfw" : http://twitter.com/fborfw to get the latest
micro-updates from the studio!
Lynn was on CBC's The Hour last night - you can watch video of her appearance here:
In mid-May, Lynn was honoured by the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society with its
Humanitarian Award for her work with the Farley Foundation, a charity which helps
people pay for veterinary bills they'd otherwise be unable to afford. You can learn
more about the Foundation here: http://www.fborfw.com/features/ffoundation/
"I think I share the award with the folks who started the Farley Foundation," Johnston
said in an interview. "They needed a mascot to go with the foundation, and when they asked
me if they could use Farley, I thought that was a wonderful fit.
Our stuffed Farley dogs are going to be going into production very shortly; please keep an
eye on our site for more information as it becomes available.
Congratulations to Lynn's daughter Kate, who recently graduated from the Emily Carr
University of Art + Design. Artistic talent clearly runs in the family!
We've got our Graduation-themed Egreets up on the site, so you can send a free e-card
to someone you love: http://www.fborfw.com/fun/egreets3/index.php?page=graduation
If you're a Facebook user, you can join the unofficial For Better or For Worse group
and talk to like-minded readers: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=2239336890
You may have noticed that some of the collection books in our store have been listed
as "temporarily sold out" for a while now. We've recently found out that Lynn's publisher is planning to move forward with treasury editions of FBorFW strips (like the Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes deluxe box sets), and therefore Lynn's earlier books may no longer be reprinted. If you want to order signed copies of any of Lynn's books from our shop, we'd encourage you to do so as soon as possible because we're not sure when or if we'll have more in stock. You can visit our store here: http://store.fborfw.com/catalog
From Wikipedia: Fan fiction (alternately referred to as fanfiction, fanfic, FF, or fic)
is a broadly-defined term used to describe stories about characters or settings written
by fans of the original work, rather than by the original creator. Works of fan fiction
are rarely commissioned or authorized by the original work's owner, creator, or publisher; also, they are almost never professionally published. Fan fiction, therefore, is defined by being both related to its subject's canonical fictional universe and simultaneously existing outside the canon of that universe. Most fan fiction writers assume that their work is read primarily by other fans, and therefore tend to presume that their readers have knowledge of the canon universe (created by a professional writer) in which their works are based.
We've been told that there's a For Better or For Worse category coming to fanfiction.net's
comics section: http://www.fanfiction.net/comic. We understand that there are quite a few
people out there who enjoy writing FBOrFW fanfic; while we don't read or specifically endorse
any FBorFW-related work that wasn't produced by Lynn, we want to be supportive of the authors
who enjoy creating stories based on Lynn's characters. So, if you're a closet fanfic writer,
fanfiction.net is your outlet for sharing your FBorFW fic!
================== Name the Game: ===================
We just created a new game: http://www.fborfw.com/fun/pegjump/ You, our newsletter subscribers, get an exclusive sneak peek.
Trouble is, we don't know what to call it! Suggest a name (send it to firstname.lastname@example.org) - if we use it, we'll send you an FBorFW-themed gift.
================== FBorFW website visitor survey: ===================
Please take a few minutes to answer these questions! We need your help to improve FBorFW.com. Send your responses to email@example.com - we'll send some complementary FBorFW gear at random to some of our survey respondents. Thanks for your help in making Lynn's web presence the best it can be.
1. what would you like to see more of on Lynn's site? More games? More egreets? More news?
2. Is there anything you like about other comics websites (or websites in general) that our site is lacking?
3. if we made Lynn's entire collection of FBorFW strips available online, would you be willing to pay for access to read all of her strips?
If so, what do you think would be a reasonable rate for access to 30 years worth of comics?
4. if Lynn's store were to sell unautographed cartoon collection books and merchandise by other artists (ie Peanuts, the Far Side), would order them?
5. regarding our Cafepress store (http://www.cafepress.com/fborfw): which characters should we be putting on our merchandise? Would you buy items that featured, for example, Weed and Carleen? Mira Sobinski? Would you prefer to see individual characters or FBorFW strips on our Cafepress items?
6. iPhone owners: would you be willing to pay for an FBorFW iPhone app that allowed you to read the day's strip on your phone? What seems like a reasonable purchase price to you?
7. if we made a free website widget available (like the Dilbert ones here: http://widget.dilbert.com/), would you use it on your website / myspace page / facebook page?
Thanks very much for your time.

Strawberry: fresa. This is interesting because the French word for "strawberry" is fraise.

The National Cartoonists Society held their annual Reuben Awards weekend at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles from May 22nd- 24th (http://www.reuben.org/news/).
