Panel 1: We start off with Glammed-up Elly sating "Come, my dear --- shall we step out?" to an impressed John. It's sort of a crapshoot trying guess if he's impressed by her looks, her entrance or the Miracle Wrap-that-turns-into-a-coat.
Panel 2: She smiles because he tells her that she looks great.
Panel 3: She's even happier when he says that he can't wait to show her off. This is where things turn to crap because he's revealed that he's mentally classified her as an object to show off instead of an entity with thoughts and feelings.
Panel 4: Her brain goes into vapor lock when he says that she looks like she's for rent. Good one, John: tell Elly to her face that your friends will think you ditched your frumpy old wife and brought a call girl to the party. That's smart.
Summary: This idiocy was from the strips Lynn sent to the syndicate so as to get her contract. This meant that Elly had yet to flap and honk yet; it also meant that they were so desperate to get a married female cartoonist, they'd take this crap.
