I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and the best for the new year. I'd also wish the today's strip actually be a sweet, light strip about the Pattersons being happy about the day but I know better; Christmas is just another thing they have to suffer through. This means I expect to see one of two things:

1) Elly looking totally defeated as she looks at the wrapping paper the kids leave behind as if picking it up were a horror too bleak to contemplate.

or

2) John makes a complete bollocks out of assembling a toy a five-year old child of average intelligence could put together in ten minutes' time.

Wrong again. It's

3) John makes an immature fool of himself at his child's expense.

Panel 1: As forworse said, it's Christmas morning and we have John playing with Mike's Super Speedway set while everyone watches him be a grinning idiot; a confused Mike asks a smirking Elly if she's sure that this was Santa's gift to Daddy. This is because, of course, the little boy thinks that since Daddy is having so much fun with it, it must be his.

Summary: This isn't the only time he's pulled this stunt. Every so often, Elly will ask one of the kids if s/he is bored with a toy only to be told that John has to get bored with it before it can be played with and eventually ignored by the person it was intended for. In this first instance, Mike wasn't aware of this so he doesn't realize that Daddy is bogarting HIS toys.
