It's old, it's stupid, it has John getting yelled at because Elly let her imagination run away with her. It's also a hint we have more flashbacks on the way.

Panel 1: We start off with Elly staring anxiously at the clock.

Panel 2: John, you see, is slightly more than an hour late and she wonders where he is. She also checks her watch to see if the clock is wrong.

Panel 3: As she tells herself he could have got in an accident and got messed up, Mike and Lizzie (who just poured her milk on the floor) stare at their crazy mother.

Panel 4: She then yells out loud that she couldn't live with out him. I'd think that this was sentimental but I'm more inclined to say, given what I've seen, that she can't physically survive without leeching off of him.

Panel 5: Sentiment turns quickly to paranoia as she next assumes that John is off swapping body fluids with a younger woman.

Panel 6: Or perhaps he's off getting stinko.

Panel 7: In any event, he finally shows up with a hearty "Hi, honey! I'm home!".

Panel 8: Before he can explain that traffic was murder today, she bellows "Where the heck have you been?!?!" at him.

Summary: John is in a no-win situation here. Even if she were to believe the innocent explanation, he's still an extra-bad guy for not calling her and telling her he'd be late. Because he can't predict the future, he's a monster. He's equally terrible if he complains about the state the house got in while she was racing around scaring herself.
