It's day three of the mission-critical "Destroy April's friendship with Eva" story arc. So far, we've seen April express gratitude that her mother doesn't trust her to behave responsibly and been given broad hints that Eva's buying things she likes but doesn't quite need will be the thing that makes frugal-to-the-point-of-absurdity April reject her. This, of course, will lead eventually to the former alien within the family pathetically eager to thank her parents because their selfish, reckless ineptiude in planning for their retirement destroyed her childhood dreams.

Panel 1: Eva asks April why she's looking in a men's wear store. April's response: she needs to buy something for Jim. Wow. The anvil dropped right off the bat. This is unusual.

Panel 2: Anyhow, she points out to Eva, who (as you will recall) doesn't actually care about his health, that she likes to bring him a present when she visits but it's difficult to shop for him.

Panel 3: He doesn't read very much, move very far or hear very well. He also has a granddaughter who accepts the faulty judgment of a stubborn, ignorant old woman prone to misinterpret what she sees.

Panel 4: All that remains, therefore, is food. Eva the flighty suggests candy that he isn't supposed to have.

Panel 5: She then asks what does she usually give him. April's response: Her time.

Summary: April the dutiful has just given her less grounded acquaintence a very subtle smackdown. Also, we may be heading into the "Put Jim in the Home" arc soon.
