The one that ages like milk because of the setting but somehow also remains timeless when we're that much like the idiot woman that raised her, Elly is the only willing prisoner of societal convention in the strip.
Panel 1: We find the Pattersons getting dressed up because Phil and Georgia have picked Jim and Marian up from the airport and are dropping them off to the Pattermanse for the holidays. We also find Elly responding to Mike's asking why they're getting all duded up with the pious, eye-closed, "I don't even want to LOOK at you when I'm lecturing you" thing that makes me angry.
Panel 2: When Liz objects, Elly tells her to go change because she wantsher mother to think well of her for oncethem to look nice.
Panel 3: Everyone meets one another.
Panel 4: John, Mike and Liz are astonished (but shouldn't be) when Jim wants to change into something more comfortable.
Summary: What Mrs "We Have To Do This" doesn't wish to admit is why 'we' have to all of the things she thinks are important. If the Pattersons were to finally figure out that Elly is too stupid to understand that Marian likes to withhold praise to spur her daughter to 'prove her mother wrong for not having faith in her', she'd finally be explainable.
