The one where Mr. Carey tells Michael why it is that he is going to fail that driving test.

Panel 1: While the comic strip did not have to draw in the seat belts yesterday compared to the 1992 comic strip, today they do.  SadMr. Carey points out that Michael is relying too much on his side mirrors.  I did not see any side mirrors on that car yesterday, so I don’t think there is anything there for Michael to rely on.  It’s very odd that Lynn calls attention to something the reader can clearly see is not there.  Hint to Lynn:  We would see the side mirror through the window behind Michael close to the bottom right of the window.

Panel 2: In stark contrast, Mr. Carey talks about the rear view mirror and it is actually there.  This does raise the question of whether Lynn Johnston knows what a side mirror is or if it is something she had just heard about on the streets.  As for the comment, “You don’t anticipate the traffic,” what does that mean?  I found that the instruction that my kids did not get in driver’s education was how to read other drivers’ potential movements in order to avoid road accidents, and there are some solid things you can point out for that, but Mr. Carey does not say what they are.  Maybe he taught my kids too.

Panel 3: Michael is out of the car and Mr. Carey touches him on the shoulder and says there is still some trouble with parallel parking.  For my kids, this was the toughest test, because they had to show they could parallel park before the driving examiner would even get in the car with them.

Panel 4:  I can almost see Lynn writing out her favorite phrase “picky face” for Michael.  You can see from his enthusiasm in getting those corrections that they went in one ear and out the other.  After all, taking instruction from others is what Michael is worst at doing.

Summary:  The second of three Mr. Carey comic strips.  Will we see him on Monday to do parallel parking instruction?  No. Instead we will see him take Michael over for the driving test.  I can’t tell from this story if Mr. Carey is a terrible teacher who pushed Michael to the driving test before he was ready, or if Mr. Carey has been teaching Mike long enough for Michael to know things if he could only get Mike to turn off the attitude that is keeping him from taking Mr. Carey’s comments seriously.   With what Lynn has presented us, either way works.
