The one wherein Laura puts lipstick on a sow.

(Original Publication Date, 1 August 1991)

Panel 1: Mike's narration resumes as he tells Martha that things got rather tense before the contest began because his cousin Laura really wanted their sow to win.

Panel 2: We go back to flashback mode when Laura declares that what the pig really needs is lipstick. This tells us that she's so much of a hayseed, she's never heard that expression before.

You will notice that she has to BORROW a lipstick from someone because the StaLynn who's about to have Elly harrumph that children have Lovely Natural Coloration and thus don't need make-up thinks the same think about farm girls. Lynn's a maniac.

Panel 3: She continues to act like a character from Pogo when she applies the lipstick to the pig. When Mike asks her where she got it, she says that she borrowed it from a Mrs Duncan whom Lynn wants to shout out to.

Panel 4: Since she's stupid, she won't understand why Mike is astonished when she says that everything is okay because she didn't tell the lady why she borrowed it.

Summary: When Michael can foresee a catastrophe (namely Mrs Duncan flipping out at Laura for putting her lipstick on a pig), it's kind of horrible to have to see that Laura cannot. It implies that she's as smart as her dad. Also, Lynn is about to boast about taking an expression so literally, it becomes a reminder of what the expression means.
