Snarky Candiru2

Wednesday, 13 May 2020

The one where it's funny and cute that Liz doesn't understand the secondary meaning of 'removed'.

(Original Publication Date, 15 May 1991)

Panel 1: The next morning, Mike comments on the incredible fact that April cried all last night and it didn't seem to faze Old Fiona one bit while Liz says that she can sleep through anything.

Panel 2: We see that no one has actually done anything about Beaumont because Liz asks him if he's seen what he's done to the curtains. Mike counters by asking if Liz has seen what Fiona has done to his room. Given how this arc ends, I should think that howtheduck is right to assume that the horrifying thing she's done is tidying things up.

Panel 3: We set up the joke and the denouement of the arc when Mike asks John point blank just how Fiona is related to them. John says that he thinks that she's a second cousin once removed.

Panel 4: Since Liz is naive and ill-informed for the purposes of the joke, she asks if Fiona had been removed once, can't she be removed again? John looks at her is if to say "Why didn't I think of that?"

Summary: This is the second time this week that John takes an off-hand comment and turns it into his marching orders. The end result is somewhat devastating to his reputation.
