Snarky Candiru2

Sunday, 19 April 2020

The one where John does not know that Farley is being punished for barking at a squirrel.

(Original Publication Date, 14 April 1991)

Panel 1: We find ourselves watching Farley bark at the tree in the back yard again.

Panel 2: This is because the squirrel from a few weeks ago is back.

Panel 3: The strip proper begins with Elly finding this to be an extra problem because Farley's barking is bound to keep April from sleeping.

Panel 4: She goes to the window to see what Farley is barking at.

Panel 5: She then delivers a wordless lecture that, given what we know of the past, is probably her chastising him as if he understood English.

Panel 6: As she saunters away angrily, it's obvious that Farley has no idea what he did to piss her off again.

Panel 7: We set up the joke when John comes along and sees Farley sitting next to the door.

Panel 8: Since John obviously thought that Farley wanted out after being cooped up inside all day, he lets him out into the back yard.

Panel 9: We then set up another unproductive row in the key of "How was I supposed to know?" when Elly is once again confronted with Farley barking outside the window at the squirrel.

Summary: As always, John is supposed to only know what Elly knows. Therefore, he is bad and wrong for assuming something inconvenient.
