Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 20 December 2018

Elizabeth uses a toddler joke in whic h she gets too damned literal about what last-minute shopping means in order to make John's dithering and stupidity a little less glaringly dumb in comparison.

Panel 1: As they drive downtown, John tells Liz why he wants to be seen with a younger woman. It seems that he needs her help because he doesn't know what to get Elly this year.

His dilemma stems from the fact that he thinks of her as being the domestic type his mom was and her tendency to clam up because she assumes that he has telepathy.

Panel 2: As they walk down the street, he says that if they walk around the shops, maybe she can give him a few ideas.

Panel 3: He sets up the cutesy-wootsie punchline by telling her that he wouldn't want Elly to think that he left it to the last minute. Elizabeth's reaction is to tell him that he didn't leave it to the last minute.

Panel 4: When she delivers the sort of pseudo-little kidspeak April gets to spout in five years by telling him that they've got all day, he gets all gobsmacked...especially since it makes her sound slightly smarter than he is.

Summary: How very odd that banal and tepid humor like this looks good compared to Elly Goes To Komedy Kourt. Lynn must have plagiarized a better sitcom this time around. Too bad that she kept her tin ear for little kid dialogue. As howtheduck would tell you, Elizabeth's talking like what an adult who has never met a child but had one described to her thinks one sounds like.
