Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 7 June 2018

Since Elly doesn't know Liz well enough to understand how literal-minded she is, her attempt to get her to pursue an alternate to badminton has depressing and off-putting results.

(Strip Number 5148, Original Publication Date, 8 June 1989)

Panel 1: As she puts away all the laundry ever, Elly gets all pious about how she gave Liz three birdies and if they got lost, she'll just have to find something else to do. Since she channels Ultra Magnus and has made "I can't deal with you" into her catchphrase, Elly cannot be asked to retrieve them because Liz will never learn if she helps her with problems.

Panel 2: She then does something very stupid and tells her to go out and get her baseball without specifically telling Liz to find someone to play catch with. The reason that this is stupid is that Elly doesn't realize that Lynn has programmed the child to take things too literally because her being a simpleton is funny.

Panel 3: Since Liz tends to lack common sense, we see her trying to use the softball as a sort of badminton birdie because she wants to play badminton. This is bad because it would either cause the handle to bend or disrupt the integrity of the netting.

Panel 4: She stands there holding a racket with a bent handle looking at the ball that didn't go very far and thought-bubbles "Somehow, it's just not the same!"

Summary: Luckily, we switch to Elly not being especially helpful somewhere else. Otherwise, we'd get chirpy, unsupportive nonsense about how she can't go out and buy badminton rackets in bulk.
