Snarky Candiru2

Saturday, 26 May 2018

When Elly whines about how calm John is when the children cruelly torment adults by acting as if they have free will and feelings, he reminds her that the stupid premise of the strip is that parents and children are born adversaries battling to the death for supremacy.

(Strip Number 5139, Original Publication Date, 27 May 1989)

Panel 1: Hours later, we find Elly in bed still whining to John about the cruelty of having her insane decrees questioned and blaming Mike for her hair-trigger temper and total inability to deal with conflict; this takes the form of envying John for remaining calm during occasions when she lets herself be driven to frothing-at-the-mouth rage over trivialities. This is bullshit because I remember him turning purple with anger when Mike questioned his self-serving Randroid garbage about how Mike and Liz are freeloading off of him.

Panel 2: Rather than simply admit that she's ten times the always angry nitwit he is, she whines that for some reason, she's ten times more likely to turn into a ranting dodo when the kids do something to bug her than he is.

Panel 3: She turns to him and asks him why it is that their behaviour doesn't affect him the way it does her.

Panel 4: He is at least honest about having a low tolerance for conflict when he tells her that she's around them ten times more than he is.

Summary: This sort of "I love my child but I don't like him very much" bullshit is why I say that John and Elly don't like their kids, they don't trust their kids, they're afraid of their kids and they don't believe what their kids say. The need to assume sight unseen that establishing an independent identity 'means' trying to beat their parents to their knees tells me that neither of the idiots we see her were ever ready to be parents and they also suck shit at it.
