Snarky Candiru2

Thursday, 18 January 2018

When John tells Elly to see a doctor about how frazzled she is, she tells him that she can't clear that amount of time from her schedule.

(Strip Number 5081, Original Publication Date, 19 January 1989)

Panel 1: The following morning, Elly resumes complaining to her clod of a husband about how she can't sleep but is instead inexplicably jumpy and irritable.

Panel 2: Instead of risking getting killed by asking what else is new, John listens to her go into panic mode about not having the time to do endless loads of laundry, to bake, to read or even to think.

Panel 3: John's diagnosis is to see a doctor about her 'nerves' so that she can have her free-floating anxiety medicated away.

Panel 4: John rolls his eyes because Elly hits him with the same "I don't have time" thing he uses on her.

Summary: The target demographic wants to see John as a monster who wants to narcotize Elly's "inexpicable" moods away so he can get tranquility at the expense of Elly's freedom of expression. Others see someone trying his best to help a neurotic whack-job who thinks that a toy on the floor means that the world is about to end to see that she doesn't have to be a whirling dervish to matter to the world.
